A new study suggests it’s important to check in with your nurse at the bedside to make certain they’re properly dressed for the cold weather.
In an interview with ABC News, Dr. Roberta Niederhofer, who heads the hospital’s Center for Healthcare Transformation, explained how it’s done.
Here are some tips on how to get the best care.
When you walk into the ER, you’re greeted by a nurse who wears the same outfit that you’re wearing.
Dr. Nieders said nurses are not wearing gloves, which can make the difference between you being okay or being in a worse condition.
NIEDERHOFFER: The most important thing is to get dressed appropriately and to get out there.
And if you can, you know, put your shoes on and you get out of the ambulance, that will help.
She said if nurses don’t wear gloves, they could potentially cause infection.
So that’s why she’s recommending wearing gloves if you’re going to be in the hospital.
NIESERHOFER: You know, we need to make an effort to make them comfortable.
And I think that the gloves that we wear today, we wear them for an entirely different reason.
The glove is to protect you from the germs that could potentially be present, so that’s really the only reason we wear gloves.
It’s not because we’re going for a good look.
We are trying to make our nurses comfortable.
You’ve got to do your best to make that work.
NIEERHOPF: You have to make it look as if you want to go.
I mean, you’ve got the coat, and then you’ve gotta go in there.
You have gotta make sure that you have all the necessary equipment.
You gotta be prepared to put the gloves on, and if they’re not comfortable, you can try putting them on again.
Nieserhoffer said the gloves are there to protect the nurse, but if there’s any sort of complication, it’s more likely to be on the patient.
That’s why there’s an effort by the nursing staff to wear gloves to help protect the patients.
NIGERHONER: I think the nurses are really good at their job, but they’re also very concerned about the patients that they’re caring for, so I think it’s really important to be prepared.
NIANNA HARTMANN: It’s important for people to wear their protective gear when they’re at a hospital, even if it’s just for a short time.
The nurse will need to put on gloves, goggles, a mask, a face shield, and even gloves, according to Niesermayer.
So be sure to wear your gloves, Niedermayer said.
